About the Retreat

Amid the Epcot Center-like versions of ancient Lanna kingdoms and high-concept, but cold, resort hotels lies this reasonable – and comfortable – property right in the heart of Chiang Mai. Only 15 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the night bazaar, Tamarind Village is accessible, friendly, and still relatively stylish – the girl next door, dressed up for a night out.

Taking its name from a 200-year-old tamarind tree on the hotel grounds, Tamarind Village sports rooms set around a series of courtyards and pool. Swathed in fabrics and textiles from the northern Thai region, the rooms are charming – if in some cases a bit cramped – and the beds comfortable. Watch out for the swinging bathroom doors, which can pinch you if you aren’t careful.

A spot of northern Thai food is available at Ruen Tamarind Restaurant, while the Village Spa uses ancient Lanna techniques to soothe, de-stress and soak away aches and pains.

Location & How to get there

Tamarind Village is set in the heart of the historic city of Chiang Mai, located 700 kms. north of Bangkok. The hotel is conveniently situated fifteen minutes from the airport, train station and bus terminal and only ten minutes from the night bazaar and riverside restaurants. Within a five to ten minute walk of the hotel are Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, the Lanna Architectural Musuem, the Three Kings Monument and several other important temples and historic sites like the Tha-Pae Gate, Wat Umong Mahatherachan and Wat Phan On.
